Requirements
Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery. Registration with a professional council: Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery. Experience: Grade 1: No experience required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery. Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign professional council in the case of a foreign-qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery. Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign professional council in the case of a foreign-qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery. Duties
Provide safe, timely and evidence-informed specialist neurosurgical care for emergency, trauma, inpatient, outpatient and operative patients. Participate actively in the neurosurgical emergency and after-hours service, including assessment, prioritisation and definitive management of acute referrals. Provide specialist care for traumatic brain injury, spinal trauma and other acute cranial and spinal neurosurgical conditions, including peri-operative and critical care decision-making. Contribute to efficient theatre utilisation, patient flow, referral management and multidisciplinary trauma and critical care pathways. Supervise, mentor and train registrars, medical officers, interns, students and other healthcare professionals, and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes.
