10 tips to get shortlisted for a government post
Practical ways to make your application stand out to a shortlisting panel.
Match the advert word for word
Panels score applications against the advert's requirements. Use the same wording in your CV when describing your qualifications and experience so a panel can tick each requirement easily.
Show dates and duties clearly
For every job on your CV, list start and end dates (month and year), your title, and your main duties. Unexplained gaps or vague duties cost points.
Tailor for each post
Put the most relevant experience first. A short cover note summarising how you meet each requirement helps.
Complete every section of the Z83
Answer every question, including disability and criminal record questions, and sign it. An incomplete Z83 can disqualify an otherwise strong application.
Apply early and follow instructions exactly
If the advert says email to a specific address with the reference in the subject line, do exactly that. Use one PDF where possible and keep file sizes small.
Prepare for the interview and assessment
Study the department's annual performance plan, the duties in the advert and relevant legislation (for example the PFMA for finance posts). Many posts include a written or practical assessment.
