How to apply for a government job in South Africa (step by step)
Exactly what to submit, where to send it and the mistakes that get applications rejected.
1. Find the post and read the whole advert
Government posts are advertised in the weekly DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular and on department websites. Read the full advert: the minimum requirements, the reference number, the closing date and the department's application instructions (email, online portal, post or hand delivery).
2. Check that you meet the minimum requirements
Shortlisting panels screen strictly against the minimum qualification and experience listed. If you don't meet them, your application will not be considered — even if you are a strong candidate otherwise.
3. Complete and sign the new Z83 form
Every application needs the new Z83 form, completed in full and signed. Quote the exact post title and reference number. Unsigned or incomplete Z83s are a leading reason applications are disqualified. You can fill yours in online with our free Z83 tool and print it.
4. Attach a detailed CV
Include your personal details, qualifications (with dates and institutions), full work history with dates, duties in each role, and at least two contactable references. Most departments now only ask for certified copies of qualifications and ID once you are shortlisted — follow the advert's instructions.
5. Submit before the closing date
Late applications are not accepted. Submit a few days early, keep proof of submission, and apply separately for each post using its own reference number.
6. After you apply
If you haven't heard back within three months of the closing date, you can usually assume your application was unsuccessful. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to interviews, competency assessments and security vetting.
